Yay! I get to have my cake and eat it too! Powerchords and Cakewalk Pro 2.0
hapilly coexists, as long as the input port is not the same. They will
however share the Ultrasound Midi Synth no problemo.
Geez, now i wont get any sleep at all!

Yes my friends, Cakewalk 2.0 support patch caching in a nice way, with even
an update patch caching option when you change patches after you load the
file. So, here's a little review:
I must say i have had a bias for cakewalk for quite some time, and Cakewalk
2.0 proves without any doubt that I was right to choose this. I have used
Cubase which seemed ok, but crashed so often i couldn't stand it. It also
didn't do patch caching and was a pain in the ass generally speaking. I also
used winjammer and midisoft recording session but these are more toys than
real tools (however they go for quite a lot less $$). Cakewalk Pro win 1 was
full of promises, but the timing was off for .wav and i got a bit of hang
notes. However, Windows Cakewalk Pro 2.0 adress all the problems i had found
in version 1. Including that patch caching was not supported. To put it in
one word: "Magnifique!". The package is well done, does patch caching, the
interface is less cluttered, it feels very robust and has incredible timing.
Even the Afterdark problem i had while playing (hang notes etc...) doesn't
happen anymore! What else... oh yeah, you can print staffs too! (version 1
didn't allow for this).
I have only played with it for 2 or 3 hours up to now, so i cant really give
you all the plus or minus points yet, but will do in a short period. I got
only 1 strange behavior, but it is a normal one that happens with every patch
caching apps: it reports that there is not enough memory on the GUS to play
the file, but it is simply because a program change happens on channel 10. To
correct, simply change the patch name to -none-. In any case it will play
correctly. Last thing: i was extremely impressed by the speed even if i run a
386-33. Wow! this program is fast and accurate!
Well, that's it for now... more details later. I'll try running Powerchords
and Cakewalk simultaneously to see if it can be done. If not, i'll hope
that Powerchords Pro will do it, cause the combination of these two programs
make the best midi package for IBM. I dont miss OS/2 as much i must say...
Ciao,

Subject: Can PAS-16 and GUS coexist?
Message-ID: <199309020108.SAA11019@power.Stanford.EDU>
I was just wondering if anyone had a PAS-16 coexisting with a GUS in their
systems?
I know this is complete and utter heresy, but I just noticed on the net
that someone said they could buy a thing called a PAS-16 Basic for $125
new (apparently it doesn't have the SCSI port and doesn't have any
built in amplification - both of which suit me perfectly).
Some dangerous thoughts: a PAS-16 would provide 16-bit recording capabilities,
an FM section for games or extra voices in music, and, best of all, it's
available RIGHT NOW!
I have been religously waiting for the GUS daughtercard but I'm beginning to
wonder. It would help if Gravis could tell us when the daughtercard is being
released, how much it's going to cost and what's so good about it.
Chris.

Unless I receive a huge amount of complaints, the GMOS
("General MIDI OS for GUS") and PUGD ("PC UNIX GUS Driver") lists will
be deleted in the next couple of days. The only traffic that has been
on either of these lists for the past month is subscribe/unsubscribe
requests.
If you'd like to continue the discussions of these topics,
please move them to the GUS Digest or the GUS-SDK Digest. (I'd
suggest the GUS-SDK Digest, since both of these projects are still in
the creation phase.)

As you may already know, the GMOS and PUGD lists are going to
be shut down in the next couple of days, due to lack of use.
Should I shut down the GUS-OS2 list as well?
The only discussions going over that list of late have been:
1] "Are the OS/2 drivers out yet?"
2] "OS/2 vs. DOS vs. Windows NT vs. (ad nauseum)"
3] "Unsubscribe me"
Topic #1 can be well covered on the GUS Digest, topic #2 has
no place on any of the GUS lists (that's an order from the moderator,
folks... namely *me*), and topic #3 is because people haven't been
paying attention on where to send requests.
I'd just assume get rid of it. Any complaints from the masses?

Has anyone else tried DMP262? It consistently (both times I tried) gave me
the infamous Off-Board Parity Error. Needless to say, I was quite
worried...
Speaking of Parity, has anyone gotten the Black Parity demo to use the GUS?
I saw the instruction sheet and followed it (mostly) but no sound. Since
it's based on the JMPROTR code from UltraForce, which also doesn't work
with my GUS, I wasn't surprised. Is this another, "Gee, everyone's GUS is
set to the defaults, right?" problem? Has anyone gotten sound from this?

So far Zone 66 and Star Controll II have been the only games to trully
have GUS support, along with many demos created by various groups.
Although these all sounded great, it is still primitive GUS support.
These games and demos all used 4 channel digital sound (basicly played
.MODs) in stereo. We all know that the ultrasound is capable of at least
16 in stereo! When a game or a demo finally uses this, then we will have
true, full, stereo Gus support.
It has been done with Ultratracker. Now they need to put it in a game.
...I'm still waiting.

===================
acme.arj - Has anyone ever gotten this to work? First of all, it's SB so we
need to us SBOS to get it to work. But it either hangs ot reboots
my computer and I haven't heard of anyone else getting it to work.
Only others experiencing the same problem I have. Has anyone else
gotten it to work?
b5th-gus.zip - As someone else has uploaded.... this file is still corrupt.
Please try again (reuploading that is)....
emf_ecl.zip - I get a "can't execute" error from DOS. Looks like the exe
is corrupted. Please fix/reupload.
Other STUFF:
============
Seems like we are starting to collect a number of Ultra Tracker files.
So we may be looking at moving all the Ultra Tracker files out of
.../sound/misc and into its own .../sound/ult/* directory structure.
I'll let you know.... any objections or other comments?
There has been some abuse of the writeability access to the submit
directory of EPAS. Remember everything you do is logged. Please don't
abuse the system or we'll be force to take action.
That's it for now. Happy GUSing....
( A hint of more news to come.....:) )

Message-ID: <9309011457.A6164wk@gravis.com>
We released a new UltraMID AIL/DIGPAK V1.02 today (09/01/93). The
filename is UMID102.ZIP and has been sent to all the Gravis nodes in
the GRV_UPD area. You should also be able to find it on the FTP sites
I would imagine within the hour <grin>. Here is a list of what has
changed since V1.0.
4.1.0 Revision History
================
V1.02 - (09/01/93) All notes off midi message fixed
V1.01 - (08/31/93) This UltraMID offers much faster patch loading than
the previous version, and is about 3K smaller.
It also can load almost twice as many patches as
it used to in the same amount of PC memory. (You
are still bound by the size of your UltraSound card
however.)
This release also fixes several small bugs.
1) DMA bug while loading patches.
2) ULTRAMID.INI problems.
3) Noises during patch loading.
New Features:
1) Automatically removes SBOS.
2) Can split up its code and data so that if you
have fragmented upper memory or not enough
upper memory, UltraMID can still load a
portion of itself high.
Have fun with it. There are some nice new features. Take a peek at the
README to find out what they are.

I have a question regarding the SBOS versions in the FAQ. Why do all

numbers less than 2.00 (i.e. around 1.20 - 1.23). Have the same games
been tested with versions higher than SBOS 2.05 (perhaps even 2.06...?) ?

Just wondering... How long are you waiting? Perhaps the game is sending

Uh, guy the problem that you are haveing with the AIL drivers is a simple
one. Mainly they do not work with Origins stuff. This is why it is
always good to peruse the README file that comes with software. The Miles
drivers that Origin uses are not the same as the standard ones. They are
slightly modified. So I guess choke it down and merely use SBOS.
Question: Did you write the company about a possible release of GUS
support in an update of Bio Menace?
